Sacramental life

Quick links:

Introduction

Christians believe that Jesus, by the suffering and death he freely underwent for our salvation, has poured out the Holy Spirit and all of God’s graces upon mankind. The cross of Jesus is like a fountain, from which the “living water” of the Holy Spirit and all the abundant streams of God’s life and blessings flow. All people can go there to drink and find life. The sacraments are simply channels through which the grace of God, flowing from the cross of Jesus, comes to us.

In the Church, sacraments are seen not as objective entities (nor magic or superstitious practices) but as personal encounters with Jesus. Sacraments are best understood as Jesus reaching out to us, saving us, forgiving us, blessing us, uniting us, consecrating us, empowering us and healing us.†

The Latin word sacramentum had its origin as the oath of allegiance taken by Roman soldiers; hence, a sacred ceremony used to impress an obligation; a solemn oath-taking; an oath.

For parents who wish their children to be baptised in the Roman Catholic Faith

Please contact the Parish Priest on telephone 0121 475 1634, or by visiting the Presbytery next to Our Lady and Saint Rose’s Church to make an appointment. Parents are encouraged to be involved in their child’s baptism. It is expected that at least one parent is a Roman Catholic and hopefully practising the Faith of the Church. Parents themselves can be helped by attending the RCIA programme (the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults), where they can learn more about the Catholic Faith – in a friendly, homely environment.

Programme of Preparation for First Holy Communion & Confirmation

Parents of children in non-Catholic schools, or those children who are not in Year 3 in either Our Lady and Saint Rose or Saint Peter’s schools, are asked to contact the Parish Priest on telephone 0121 475 1634, or by visiting the Presbytery next to Our Lady and Saint Rose’s Church to make an appointment, if they would like their child/ren to be prepared for First Holy Communion or Confirmation. At least one parent should be a Roman Catholic and hopefully practising the Faith of the Church or intends or is interested in becoming a Roman Catholic – by attending the adult programme, known as RCIA (the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults).
